Well, today is the official launch for The Fashion Committee. I had a few fun things planned, but I’m going to put them off. Given what happened yesterday in Manchester this feels like the wrong moment for self-promotion and celebration. The world is full of horrors, but some incidents stand out for their calculated cruelty. This is one of them. Attacking a stadium full of children and teenagers as they celebrate the music and culture they’re just learning to embrace is, as the assailants intended, devastating to decent people.
Thoughts and prayers are pale, inadequate things but it’s hard to know what else to offer those affected. I guess I’ll spend part of today remembering that the goal of terrorism is to sew fear and hatred and refusing to oblige. Equally, this seems like a good time to reject intolerance and bigotry.
Terrorists want people to choose fear over freedom. Their addled world view is one in which kindness and love and the exuberant joy of young people are targets to be exploited. Newsflash, jerkos. The world has at least as much good in it as bad and your actions will never stop the overwhelming life force of the kids and teenagers who are creating a new cultural and political landscape for all of us. Long may they dance.
